# Cashback is not the same as money off today

By The Coupon Queen · Published 19 October 2026

Compare what you pay now with credit you may receive later.

An instant discount reduces the current checkout total. Cashback may arrive later as cash, loyalty points or store credit. The word alone does not tell you which.

## Compare two separate numbers

For a hypothetical basket of 300, a 10% instant discount saves 30 and leaves 270 to pay before fees. A 10% store-credit offer can leave the full 300 payable now, with 30 credited later if the order qualifies.

## Read the credit conditions

- When is credit issued: after payment, delivery or the return window?
- Can you withdraw it, or only use it at that store?
- When does it expire, and does spending it require another minimum order?
- What happens after a partial return?

If you do not expect to shop again before the credit expires, its practical value to you may be lower than its face value.

## Choose the offer for your basket

A smaller immediate discount can be more useful than a larger future credit. Our listings state the benefit type; the calculator shows immediate payment and later credit separately.
