When 20% off stops being 20% off

A quick way to spot the basket where a coupon reaches its cap.
A capped percentage code has two numbers: the percentage and the maximum saving. Once the cap is reached, a larger basket does not produce a larger discount.
Find the cap point
Divide the maximum saving by the percentage expressed as a decimal. For a hypothetical 20% coupon capped at 75, the cap point is 75 ÷ 0.20 = 375.
| Eligible basket | Saving | Effective discount |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | 40 | 20% |
| 375 | 75 | 20% |
| 750 | 75 | 10% |
Use the eligible subtotal
If some brands are excluded, calculate on the remaining eligible items. Check whether the merchant measures its minimum before or after another discount. Do not assume delivery or taxes qualify.
Do not spend just to reach the cap
Adding an unwanted item can increase your saving and still increase what you pay. Compare the final total for what you actually need.
